Gorilla gorilla (Savage, 1847)

서부고릴라(학명: Gorilla gorilla)는 아프리카에 서식하는 유인원으로 고릴라속에 속하는 두 종 중의 하나이다. 수컷은 몸무게가 약 168kg에 달하는 크고 튼튼한 체격을 가지고 있으며, 아프리카 중서부 지역에 서식한다. 동부고릴라와는 지리적으로 고립되어 있다. 서부고릴라의 털 색깔은 동부고릴라보다 훨씬 밝다. 국제자연보호연맹의 IUCN 적색 목록은 서부고릴라를 절멸위급종으로 분류하고 있다. 서부고릴라는 동부고릴라 다음으로 현존하는 두 번째로 큰 영장류다. 서부고릴라는 크게 두 아종으로 나뉘는데, 서부저지대고릴라는 서아프리카 대부분 지역에 서식하고, 크로스강고릴라는 카메룬과 나이지리아 국경 지역의 북부 좁은 지역에만 분포한다. 두 아종 모두 절멸위급종으로 분류되어 있다.
