🐔Chicken
닭(학명: Gallus gallus domesticus)은 닭목 꿩과에 속하는 가축화된 새이며, 적색야계의 아종이다. 닭은 가장 흔하고 널리 퍼져 있는 가축 중 하나이다. 미국의 통계 전문 기관인 스테티스타에 따르면 2016년 기준 지구 상에 최소 227억 마리의 닭이 존재하며, 이는 다른 어떤 조류보다도 수요가 압도적으로 많은 것이다. 인간은 닭을 주로 고기와 알과 같은 식품을 얻기 위해 기르며, 드물게는 반려동물으로 키우기도 한다. 닭의 기원에 대해서는 분명치 않으나 기원전 6000-8000년 즈음 동남아시아 일대에 서식하던 야생 적색야계가 인간에 의해 가축화되어 지금의 닭이 되었다. 암탉은 길들여지기 전에는 1년에 몇 번, 수탉과 짝짓기를 하고 나서에만 유정란을 낳았지만 길들여진 후에 무정란을 낳기 시작했다. 서구권에서 닭은 원래 닭싸움이나 종교적인 의식을 위해 키웠으며 헬레니즘 시대가 지나고 나서야 비로소 식용으로 키우기 시작하였다. 닭의 어린 개체는 병아리라 부른다. 닭의 알은 "달걀" 또는 "계란"이라 부른다.
