🐾Beluga whale
흰고래(Delphinapterus leucas, white whale)는 북극과 그 주변 지역에 서식하는 고래이다. 일각고래와 함께 외뿔고래과의 종 중의 하나이다. 벨루가(beluga whale, beluga)라고도 한다. “벨루가”라는 이름은 러시아어 벨루가(белу́га)에서 유래했으며, 이는 “흰색”을 의미하는 벨리(белый)에서 파생되었다. “흰고래“라는 이름은 성체가 보여주는 순백색의 색깔을 반영한다. 흰고래는 종종 같은 모노돈티드 과에 속하는 일각고래와 혼동되기도 한다. 몸 길이는 최고 5.5미터 에 이르며 하얀 몸과 멜론 같이 생긴 머리를 가지고 있어서 "melonhead"라고 불리기도 한다. 현재 22종의 흰고래가 알려져 있다.
