Melanogrammus aeglefinus (Linnaeus, 1758)

Mezgit (Merlangius euxmus), Gadidae familyasına ait bir balık türü. Bakalyaro ile birlikte Merlangius cinsine aittir. Atlas Okyanusu'nun kuzeyinde yaygın olarak rastlanır. Ortalama 20–40 cm boyunda olur. Aslında denizin 30-40 metre derinliğinde yaşar ama hamsi ve sardalya gibi küçük sürü balıklarını avlamak için yüzeylere de çıkar. Genelde şubat ile mayıs ayı arasında üreme zamanıdır, ama bu bölgesel olarak değişebilir. Bütün sene boyunca balıkçılar tarafından bolca avlanılır. Ekonomik değeri yüksektir.
