🐊Cuban crocodile
キューバワニ（玖瑪鰐、Crocodylus rhombifer）はクロコダイル属に分類されるワニの一種。キューバの固有種であり、通常全長は2.1-2.3m、体重は70-80kgである。大型の雄は全長3.5m、体重215kgに達する。クロコダイルの中で最も縄張り意識が強く、人間にとって潜在的に危険である。 その身体的特徴と行動から、生物学者の関心を集めている。長くて強い脚を持ち、クロコダイルの中で最も陸生傾向が強い。マングローブ林の湿地、沿岸のラグーン、河口、沼地、氾濫原、三角州など、淡水および汽水環境に生息する。成体は魚、カメ、小型哺乳類を、幼体は無脊椎動物や小魚を捕食する。交尾は5月から7月の間に行われる。飼育下個体は協力して狩猟を行い、芸を覚えることもあるため、知能は高いと考えられている。 国際自然保護連合のレッドリストでは近絶滅種に指定されている。かつてはカリブ海全域に分布していたが、人間の狩猟により、現在の分布域はサパタ湿地とフベントゥド島のみとなっている。個体数の回復のため、飼育下繁殖が実施されている。化石記録によるとかつては広く分布しており、バハマ諸島、イスパニョーラ島のドミニカ共和国側、ケイマン諸島から化石が発見されている。
