Az atlanti tőrfarkú rák (Limulus polyphemus) a rákszabásúak (Merostomata) osztályának tőrfarkúak (Xiphosura) rendjébe, ezen belül a tőrfarkú rákfélék (Limulidae) családjába tartozó faj. Manapság, nemének egyetlen faja. Korábban a Limulus nembe sorolták a mangrové tőrfarkú rákot (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda) is, Limulus rotundicauda néven.
