Xestobium rufovillosum (De Geer, 1774)

报死窃蠹（ Xestobium rufovillosum ）是一种蛀木蛛甲科甲虫，該物種會侵蝕老旧建筑的木材。报死窃蠹成虫呈棕色，平均体长7 mm（0.3英寸）。报死窃蠹會在建筑物舊木材的陰暗裂縫中产卵。幼蟲鑽入木材內部，在化蛹前可取食長達十年，隨後作為成蟲從木材中鑽出。受潮且受真菌腐蝕的木材較為柔軟，足以讓幼蟲咬穿。它們利用腸道中的酶消化木材中的纤维素和半纤维素，並以此獲取營養。由於杀虫剂杀死幼虫的效果甚微，因此在春季和初夏成虫破蛹而出时将其消灭或许是更好的选择。然而通常报死窃蠹的受害對象仅限于历史建筑，因为现代建筑往往更多使用的是軟木，而不是报死窃蠹偏爱的陈年橡木。
