Gallus gallus (Linnaeus, 1758)

雞或家鸡（学名：Gallus gallus domesticus）是被人類驯化成家禽的原鸡亚种。家雞最初被馴化的目的是为人类提供廉價優質的雞肉和雞蛋等食用蛋白质來源，是新石器革命最早被人类驯化的动物之一，也是现今數量最多、分布也最廣的鸟类亚种，据统计其總數于2023年超過270億隻，其生物量高于所有野生鸟类的总和。和大部份雉科鳥類一樣，雞不善飛行，被驯化后更是已喪失了大部分的飛行能力，只能短距离飞行。人類在馴養雞的過程中，出於獲取足夠糧食、肉類和優質蛋白質來源的需要，對其族群進行了人工选择育種，導致雞被養成超重，不成比例的肥大，飛行能力才會比其他野生雉科鳥類還要差。
