Het dwergnijlpaard (Choeropsis liberiensis of Hexaprotodon liberiensis) is de enige nog bestaande soort in het geslacht Choeropsis en vormt samen met het gewone nijlpaard de enige overlevende soorten van de nijlpaarden-familie. Het gemiddelde gewicht van dwergnijlpaarden in gevangenschap is 160 tot 275 kg, met een kop-romplengte van omstreeks 173 cm en een schofthoogte van 70 tot 80 cm. Mannetjes zijn meestal wat groter en zwaarder dan vrouwtjes. Volwassen dwergnijlpaarden doen denken aan een jong van het veel grotere en zwaardere gewone nijlpaard. Het is een solitair, in het bos levend dier dat alleen in het wild voorkomt in de bossen van West-Afrika. Het dwergnijlpaard staat op de Rode Lijst van de IUCN van bedreigde soorten en is opgenomen in Bijlage II van de Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Deze soort is relatief zeldzaam in zoΓΆlogische instellingen en privΓ©collecties wereldwijd. Er waren tot voor kort twee ondersoorten: Choeropsis liberiensis liberiensis en Choeropsis liberiensis heslopi, maar deze laatste is inmiddels vermoedelijk uitgestorven.
