🐺Island fox
שועל איים אפור (שם מדעי: Urocyon littoralis) הוא מין דמוי-שועל קטן המשתייך לסוג שועל אפור, אשר חי בשישה מתוך שמונת איי התעלה של קליפורניה. זהו השועל הקטן מבין מיני השועלים בארצות הברית. המין מחולק לשישה תת-מינים, כל אחד ייחודי לאי שבו הוא חי. סוג השועל האפור כולל שני מינים: שועל האיים האפור והשועל האפור המצוי שחי ביבשת. שועל האיים האפור התפתח מהשועל האפור המצוי. גודלו הקטן הוא תוצאה של תופעת ננסות מקומית, שהיא סוג של מולדת אחרת (ספציאציה אלופטרית). בידודם הגאוגרפי של השועלים האפורים חושף אותם לסכנות קיומיות כמו טפילים ומחלות שמובאים לאיים מהיבשת. במיוחד אוכלוסייתם רגישה למחלות ולטפילים שנישאים על גבי כלבים מבויתים. בנוסף, ציד שועלים על ידי העיט הזהוב ופעולות האדם פגעו באוכלוסיות שועל האיים האפור במספר איים במהלך שנות התשעים. בשנת 2004 הכירה ארצות הברית בארבעה תת-מינים ככאלו המרחפת מעליהם סכנת הכחדה. מסיבה זו הם הוכנסו לרשימת המינים המוגנים, ובמסגרת זו נעשים מאמצים לשיקום אוכלוסיות השועל והמערכות האקולוגיות של איי התעלה.
