🪱Hirudo medicinalis
עלוקה רפואית (שם מדעי: Hirudo medicinalis) היא אחד ממינים רבים של עלוקות ששימשו בעבר כ"עלוקות רפואיות". העלוקה הרפואית האירופאית מסוגלת למצוץ פי חמישה דם ממשקל גופה ומפרישה לפצע חומר נוגד קרישה המותיר את הפצע מדמם עד כעשר שעות. ברפואה המסורתית היא שימשה בהליכים רפואיים בעיקר להקזת דם. ברפואה מודרנית יש לה עדיין מספר שימושים, והעיקרי בהם הוא בניתוח לחיבור מחדש של רקמות, למשל: אצבע גדומה. עקב אי-יכולת המנתחים לחבר מחדש את הוורידים (כשמחברים אך ורק את העורקים הראשיים), דם זורם לתוך הרקמה אך לא יוצא ממנה; העלוקה מוצצת עודפי דם, וחשוב מכך, מפרישה כל הזמן נוגדי קרישה למקום הנדרש, וזה מאפשר לגוף לבנות מחדש את הוורידים שנקטעו.
