Iguana iguana (Linnaeus, 1758)

איגואנה ירוקה או איגואנה מצויה (שם מדעי: Iguana iguana) היא מין של זוחל המשתייך לסוג איגואנה שבמשפחת האיגואניים. האיגואנה הירוקה נפוצה בעיקר באמריקה הדרומית והמרכזית, ותחום תפוצתה משתרע מדרום ברזיל ופרגוואי עד למקסיקו ולאיים הקאריביים. בארצות הברית היא נפוצה בעמק הריו גראנדה בטקסס, דרום פלורידה, פלורידה קיז ואיי הוואי. המין תואר לראשונה בשנת 1758 על ידי הבוטנאי השוודי קארולוס ליניאוס. לסוג איגואנה שייכת האיגואנה הירוקה ואיגואנת האנטילים הקטנים. מקור השם "איגואנה" הוא מהשיבוש הספרדי לשם "איוואנה" (Iwana), בו השתמש שבט הטאינו. עד היום, במדינות דוברות ספרדית, זכרי האיגואנה הירוקה נקראים "גורובו", "מיניסטרו" או "דניאלורטרס", והצעירים נקראים "איגואניטה" או "גורוביטו". בטבע האיגואנה הירוקה מגיעה לאורך של כ-1.66 מטרים, ולמשקל של כ-10 קילוגרם. בשביה ניתן למצוא פרטים המגיעים לאורך של כ-2 מטרים ויותר. אורך חיי האיגואנה בטבע מגיע לחמש עשרה שנה, ובשביה יכול לעבור אף את העשרים.
