🐚Giant cuttlefish
דיונון אוסטרלי (שם מדעי: Sepia apama) הוא מין מסדרת הדיונונים המצוי בימים הטרופיים סביב חופי דרום אוסטרליה והוא המין הגדול ביותר בסדרת הדיונונים. זהו דיונון כבד מאוד. הוא שוקל 10.5 ק"ג ואורך גופו עד 50 ס"מ. הדיונונים בעלי עיניים גדולות, 8 זרועות גדולות ו-2 מהם הם זרועות ציד היכולות לנוע קדימה במהירות וסביב גופו מעוטרת גלימה המחליפה צבעים בסגנונות ראוותניים. הדיונון יכול לנפח את ממדי גופו או להסתוות הן בין האלמוגים והאצות והן בצבע החול. הם ניזונים מיצורים קטנים החיים סביבם במים. המזון המועדף עליהם הוא סרטנים קצרי בטן וגם על דגים. הטרף נתפס על ידי 8 הזרועות ומועבר למקור הקרני שבתחתית הגוף. הם עצמם נטרפים על ידי דולפינן אנקולי, כרישים, דוב ים ניו זילנדי, דיונונים גדולים ומדגי קולייס ודקר. הדיונונים מתרבים באזורים של עשבי ים בעומק 100 מ'. כל זכר מחפש לעצמו כמה נקבות בעונת הרבייה ומתחרה בזכרים יריבים. במצב שהיריבים שווים הם יקראו תיגר אחד על השני וינסו לתפוס בזרועותיהם אחד את גלימת השני ולקרוע אותה עד שאחד הצדדים מפסיד. ואולם כמה דיונונים פיתחו שיטה להערים על זכרים גדולים יותר: חלק מתגנבים במהירות לנקבות ומזדווגים לפני שהדיונון הגדול יבחין, אחרים מתחקים לנקבות וכך מערימים על הזכר הגדול ומצליחים לחמוק תחתיו כמו שאר הנקבות ולהזדווג עם חלק מהם. הדיונונים מטילים ביצים על תקרת אבנים.
