🐟Atlantic herring

Clupea harengus Linnaeus, 1758

מליח אטלנטי (שם מדעי: Clupea harengus) הוא מין של דג מסוג מליח (הרינג) ממשפחת הסרדיניים המצוי בצפון האוקיינוס האטלנטי. זהו דג נפוץ ביותר שאורכו עד 45 ס"מ ומשקלו 1.1 ק"ג. הוא בעל קשקשים כסופים וראש קטן, הגוף מוארך ואין לו הרבה סנפירים. דג זה נחשב כשר ביהדות וממנו מכינים דג מלוח. המליחים שוחים ברחבי האוקיינוסים וניזונים מפלנקטון ומשטרגליים שהם תופסים בלסתות פעורות. להקות רבות מגיעות לימים הפוריים של צפון האוקיינוס האטלנטי כדי להיזון משפע הפלנקטון ובחורף הם נחים בפיורדים המגוננים עליהם מסערות. למליחים אויבים רבים, ביניהם דגים טורפים כמו הטונה, הסלמון, דגי הורדון והבקלה, כרישים, דולפיניים ולווייתני אורקה וכן כלבי ים, אריות ים, עופות ים שונים ודייגים אנושיים. אין להם כמעט הגנה מטורפיהם למעט הסתחררות בצורת כדור דגים היכול לבלבל כמה מיני טורפים.
