Caenorhabditis elegans (או בקיצור C. elegans) היא מין של נמטודה (תולעת עגולה) באורך של כ-1 מ"מ, אשר חיה באדמה בטמפרטורות פושרות. תולעת זו היא אחד מיצורי המודל הנחקרים ביותר בגנטיקה ובביולוגיה ההתפתחותית. חקר אורגניזם זה החל ב-1965 במעבדתו של סידני ברנר מה שהעניק לו פרס נובל לפיזיולוגיה או לרפואה והניב פרסי נובל נוספים עקב מחקרי המשך. C. elegans היא בעלת סימטריה דו-צדדית עם מעטפת מקוטיקולה, ללא סגמנטציה (חלוקה לפרקים), עם ארבעה מיתרים אפידרמליים. היא מכילה מערכת של מספר איברים: מערכת עיכול, מערכת עצבים, מערכת רבייה ושרירים. C. elegans ניזונה מחיידקים, כגון E. coli. ה-C. elegans היא הרמאפרודיטית, והיא יכולה להפרות את עצמה ובכך להתרבות. קצב הרבייה שלה מהיר ביותר ואורך חייה הוא כשלושה שבועות בערך.
