Zalophus californianus (Lesson, 1828)

Tyynenmerenhylje eli kalifornianmerileijona (Zalophus californianus) on Pohjois-Amerikan Tyynenmeren rannikoilla elävä haaremihyljelaji. Sen pääasiallinen lisääntymisalue on Kalifornian eteläosassa ja Kalifornian niemimaan alueella Meksikossa, mutta lajia esiintyy myös paljon pohjoisemmassa. Koulutetut sirkushylkeet, jotka temppuilevat sirkusten ja meriakvaarioiden näytöksissä, ovat perinteisesti juuri tyynenmerenhylkeitä. Yhdysvaltain merivoimat on kouluttanut näitä hylkeitä myös puolustustarkoituksiin. Tyynenmerenhyljekoiras voi kasvaa 2,4 metrin pituiseksi ja painaa 400 kiloa. Naaraat jäävät alle kaksimetrisiksi ja keskimäärin painavat 110 kg. Yksilön ikä voidaan laskea sen hampaiden vuosirenkaista. Luonnosta on löydetty 17-vuotias yksilö; vankeudessa laji on elänyt 31-vuotiaaksi. Tyynenmerenhylkeen kanta on vahva, Yhdysvalloissa lähellä kantokykyä. Kokonaispopulaatio on arvioitu noin 355 000 yksilöksi, lisääntymisyhdyskuntia on yhteensä 26 Yhdysvalloissa ja Meksikossa. Tyynenmerenhylkeeseen on joskus luettu kuuluvaksi myös kaksi erillään elävää alalajia, Galápagossaarten "galapagosinmerileijona" (Zalophus californianus wollebaeki) ja Japaninmeren eteläosan "japaninmerileijona" (Zalophus californianus japonicus), joista jälkimmäinen on kuollut sukupuuttoon 1950-luvulla. Nykyisin nämä kuitenkin usein katsotaan itsenäisiksi lajeiksi.
