🪲Boll weevil
Puuvillakärsäkäs (Anthonomus grandis) on Keski-Amerikasta lähtöisin oleva puuvillan tuholainen. Puuvillakärsäkäs levisi Meksikosta Yhdysvaltoihin, jossa se havaittiin ensi kertaa Brownsvillessa 1892. Vuoteen 1915 se oli saavuttanut Alabaman ja levisi 1920-luvulle mennessä koko Yhdysvaltain puuvillanviljelyalueelle. Hyönteinen aiheutti tuhoja viljelmillä, mikä pahensi 1930-luvun suuren laman vaikutusta. Se johti myös puuvillan viljelyn vähentämiseen ja maanviljelyn ja talouden monipuolistamiseen, mm. maapähkinänviljelyn aloittamiseen. Etelä-Amerikassa se ilmestyi Venezuelaan 1949 ja Kolumbiaan 1950. Amazonin sademetsän uskottiin estävän sen leviämisen, mutta hyönteinen ilmaantui Brasiliaan 1983 ja 1990-luvulla Paraguayin ja Argentiinaan. Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen DDT:n keksiminen mahdollisti taas puuvillan viljelyn laajentamisen Yhdysvalloissa myrkyn käytön avulla. 1970-luvulla Yhdysvalloissa aloitettiin laaja ohjelma hyönteisen tuhoamiseksi. Laajat ruiskutukset, viljelyn ohjaus ja jo korjatun puuvillan jäänteiden kyntö maan sisään mahdollistivat torjunta-aineiden vähentämisen. Biologiseen torjuntaa on käytetty tulimuurahaista, loispistiäisiä ja Beauveria bassiana -hometta ja Chilo-virusta.
