🐟Black scabbardfish

Aphanopus carbo Lowe, 1839

Mustahuotrakala (Aphanopus carbo) on Atlantin valtameressä elävä kalalaji. Sitä esiintyy 69:nnen ja 27:nnen pohjoisen leveyspiirin välisellä alueella. Se elää noin 200–1 700 metrin syvyydessä. Pituutta kalalla voi olla jopa 110 cm. Kala on väriltään musta ja sillä on erityisesti merkille pantavat suuret silmät ja terävät hampaat. Liha on väriltään vaaleata ja miedon makuista. Kalaa kutsutaan esimerkiksi Portugalissa Espadaksi sen miekkaa muistuttavan ulkonäön vuoksi. Kalaa pyydetään siimalla yleensä aamuyöstä, jolloin kalat nousevat matalampiin vesiin. Kala menehtyy pintaan nostettaessa paine-eron vuoksi. Mustahuotrakalan pyynti on taloudellisesti merkittävää Pyreneiden niemimaan rannikolla ja erityisesti Madeiran vesillä, jossa se on hyvin arvostettu. Mustahuotrakalaa on Madeiralla tarjolla useimmissa ravintoloissa ja se kuuluu turisteille tarjottaviin ruokalistoihin lähes poikkeuksetta.
