Falco rusticolus Linnaeus, 1758

Der Gerfalke (Falco rusticolus) ist die weltweit größte Falkenart. Er ist zirkumpolar in den arktischen Regionen Eurasiens und Nordamerikas sowie Grönlands vertreten und besiedelt dort die Tundra. In Mitteleuropa ist er nur sehr selten als Wintergast zu beobachten und hält sich dann meist in Küstennähe auf. Der Gerfalke, dessen horizontale Fluggeschwindigkeit die des Wanderfalken übertrifft, wird seit dem Mittelalter als Beizvogel (Jagdfalke) sehr geschätzt. Weiße Gerfalken galten als besonders wertvoll und zählten regelmäßig zu den Geschenken an und zwischen Fürstenhäusern.
